Mercy James

Pop singer Madonna is set to adopt another Malawian child, this time a girl named Mercy:

Pop superstar Madonna is all set to adopt another Malawian child. This time it is three-year-old Mercy James.

Madonna had abandoned the idea of adoption after her marriage to British director Guy Ritchie seemed to be in trouble. But officials confirmed Tuesday that she has resumed her adoption process, which friends say proves their marriage is back on track, reports thesun.co.uk.

Penstone Kilembe, Malawian adoption minister, said: ‘Madonna’s representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced – all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities. Then Mercy will be able to leave the country for a new life.’

The singer, who will soon turn 50, wants her son David Banda to have a sister.

A close friend said: ‘The adoption process in Malawi is so long and stressful that all the legal wrangling put a huge strain on their marriage. They dropped proceedings to pour all their energies into each other. But Madonna now feels they are stable enough to press ahead with the adoption again.’

  1. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something just doesn’t see right about this growing trend. adopting lil black children.

  2. If someone non-black adopts a black child…could they please make sure they’re not completely cut off from other black people or from their culture? it’s totally disconcerting to watch that happen, so i hope all those who are not black and are adopting black children are fair to their kids and let them know where they came from and are not alienating them from their culture. this actually goes to all kids of color.

  3. Its good she wants her son to have a sister!

  4. Jasmine all families i know do this. As a white woman who hopes to adopt international i am choseing the county based on which population is higher in my area which is indian, i am also learning as much as i can including language.

  5. Madonna is annoying.

  6. It seems to me that there are children. Black children. In this country who need love and support. I don’t see why we have to go so far away from home to help out.

  7. I’d have to agree with shesh1nes. Why leave the country if that’s what you want to do? That’s why I think it’s a buncha crap whenever I hear of that going on.

  8. I hate when people criticize others and they do nothing themselves to help solve the problem that they complain about. ALL of God’s children deserve a loving home.

We are always wondering why people can’t see past skin color and then we go and complain when races unite in love. Sheesh!

  9. I’m not sure what to even say about this one. I still get the notion that these children are human accessories.

  10. Her rep has said it is not true

  11. I think it is good that she is adopting a Malawian sister for David. Whether there it is a trend or an accessory, kids are getting adopted at higher rates than ever. As long as their get love and nourishment, I have no problem with the “African adoption trend.”

  12. David already has a sister. Her name is Lourdes (Madonna’s daughter)!

  13. Lollipop quit being smart…You know what they meant. They meant someone that looks like him. And I think it’s great another unfortunate child is being adopted to have a better life.

  14. i just posted about this same shit.
    i think it’s awesome what she’s doing,
but i question the motives. especially
since there are so many underprivileged
children living right here in America.

check the blog, and tell me how you feel.

    i think it’s a little odd.

  15. Why don’t all of you guy who are complain adopt? why complain about celebs? 1 other thing, noone is obligated to adopt American babies. Madonna and other celebs are individual who live all over the world and probably feel those countries need it more.I have to agree about teaching the kids about their culture though.

  16. to adoptyourselves: In all honesty, I plan to adopt when I’m old enough, currently I’m only 22. I never said she was obligated to adopt American children, I just said i don’t get why she hasn’t. And to say kids that live in other countries need it more is just untrue. How easy would it be for you to say that to the kids living in the awful foster homes where the people there only “house” them to continue receiving government checks? “Oh it’s okay that you’re here, everyone is adopting the kids from other countries that need it more…” Give me a break.

to SUZ: I agree that teaching a child about their culture is awesome, I just don’t think it takes a child that “looks like him” to do it. In fact, I know it doesn’t.

  17. antwanfishwer to quote your post. ”where the people there only “house” them to continue receiving government checks?”

In some countries there are no ‘government checks’. celebrities such as Madonna aswell as regular people who travel aboard to less wealthy countries probably witness this. And if you are going to adopt in the future you shouldn’t discourage others from adopting, just because you think american kids need it more. Australian Hugh Jackman and his wife adopted minorities kids from America. Also Madonnas’ husband Guy Ritchie is British. What if he prefered an African or Asian Baby? There are people who don’t believe whites should adopt minoritie kids at all. There are a few cases in America where kids got returned to their abusive birth parents because some in the black community thought it was wrong for them to adopt. So that might explain why some don’t want to adopt from at home. The complication and fears of parents coming back to take them.

  18. I forgot to add that there are adoption cases in America where white and black kids went back to their birth parents upon request by the birth parents. And I am discouraging any kind of adoption. I’m just trying to look at the whole picture.

  19. Years before the celebrity trend of adopting non-caucasian children started, there were regular people who adopted kids from Asia India, and the former Soviet Union. The only thing that concerns me is the culture or identity crisis some adpoted kids have.

  20. I just think Madonna has other motives in adopting a child from Malawi. In fact, if you google search the place, more articles come up about her, than actual facts on the country. it’s just a little too perfect. Also, I’m not saying American kids need it more. Not saying that at all. what I am saying is that one doesn’t need to travel across the globe to do so, and that one should help with the issues in ones own backyard.

as for the “government checks” statement, yeah, the kids here might as well be in those countries, because they aren’t seeing any of the money anyway. foster care is an oasis for anyone and neither is living in poverty in Malawi. So I don’t see why she hasn’t gotten a child here.

Color isn’t an issue. I don’t care if she adopted a white baby from Alabama, or a black baby from Tennessee, as long as she’s doing it here at least once. Going over to a place like Malawi is really just a call for attention, and I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that would negate the validity of that statement.

  21. The difference is that an American kid, even underprivileged, has a way better future than any of these kids coming from a Third World country (my native tongue isn’t your english).
