Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting “Assassinate Obama.” Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America. From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been “hundreds” of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: “I hope Obama gets assassinated.” That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law’s front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

“I can’t say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it,” said Millner, who is black. “But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they’re capable of and what they’re really thinking.”

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is “a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them.”

  1. Well now they know what it feels like for the Indians and the Africans when their homelands were stolen!

  2. Thank you BCK one of the many reasons we love your site. You see this statement right here. “Potok, who is white, said he believes there is “a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them.” It speaks volumes. I am reading between the lines and what this says to me is they are afraid to reap what they have sown. They are afraid the tables have turned. They feel like their place in the US is no longer superior. Desperate times call for desperate measures. You all be cautious guns sales have been high since the election. People’s ignorance has no bounds.

  3. People have been congratulating America and saying that it’s past racism but even I in the UK knew that those in the South with their archaic attitude wouldnt change. I hope that ppl dont take this lying down. i mean i know u cant please everyone but that’s ridiculous. I have a relative working in mississippi and she says that eveyone at her workplace is acting hush and hush and tensions are simmering. SMH.

  4. If you ask me, I can understand why they would be scared. Just think with all the horrible things they have done to people they have tried to portray as less than, the Indians, African, Asians, Mexicans. If you thought someone you have wronged horribly was in the position that you normally found yourself, not only would you feel powerless you would be afraid that they would do to you what you have done to them. I personally think Obama is above that, however when you are capable of committing terrible acts against people you tend to think they are capable of returning the same to you. True or not it is all in your perspective. The main people that do stuff wrong are the main people suspicious of everyone else.

  5. I cosign with Maryamb. It’s about fear. They believe that white privilege as they know it might become a thing of the past, and they are running scared. Yes, the chicken have come home to roost.

Woop, a “friend” of mine from church (of all places) as turned face as well. I noticed after the election, her reception has been cool. Well at least you can see the phonies for what they are.

  6. People like that will always live some where in the world. But with BO’s win… hopefully we’re starting to see “Multicultural and diverse” people are edging them out. They only want “white men” in a position of power. Their way of life…their sense of entitlement is “Gone with the Wind” and on some level they know it. They can start acting right. And learn how to play with others or they can keep acting out. Pissing on things to mark what they think is “rightfully” theirs. Is getting them no where. With every new generation their numbers drop.

And what I can’t wrap my head around is… they’ll keep a party (president) in office. That doesn’t do sh*t for them. Over a man (black) who wants to help save their jobs and homes?! That just shows you how dumb racism is.

  7. white people are afraid of having a black president, possibly because of what whites put us through they think that obama will do something to “revenge”

  8. forefathers built, are you kidding me!!!

  9. You reap what you sow. 😦

  10. I second that comment from Dee!! Time for a Change!!

  11. This ie exactly why I didn’t want Obama to win….I am a black woman, and now I have to fear evem more for my children’s safety in school, because some crazed white person thinks now they must kill as many black people as possible because of Obams’s success.

  12. LadyOne, it’s sad that you live in such fear. Some people will always think there is a justifiable reason for violence against others because of their outward appearance and ethnic affiliation. The thought that we should not reach our full potential because of retaliatory hate crimes is absurd. That is exactly what those people who advocate hate want: blacks and other minorities to “stay in their places.” I hope you’re not teaching your children to bow down to others’ low expectations.

Further, with that mentality, I take it you don’t work, for fear that a “crazed white person,” as you put it, might hurt you for taking a job to which he or she is entitled.

  13. Lady One, SMH. I have to say I agree with Notbuyingit. I have fears as well which I have stated. However I take an entirely different approach with my children. I tell them that when other people say mean things they do that because they don’t feel good about themselves and that the only opinion of them they should care about is their own. When people say mean things it makes them feel better by making you feel worse. You should never give people that kind of power over you. No one can make you feel bad about who you are without your permission.

You should not put your fear of the world on your children. It is your fear and their life experiences don’t compare to yours. You and your kids are separate beings. If someone said something to you and it hurt you, someone could say the same thing to your kids and they could care less. If people do say things to hurt them you should be their soft place to fall. Not have them fearing what others will do to them. The only thing you can do to really help them is to let them know when the world is cruel that you will be their shoulder to cry on. We all need to know we have at least one place where we fell accepted no matter what. You be that for your kids and they will cope way better in this world then you scary them.

  14. where we feel accepted no matter what. You be that for your kids and they will cope way better in this world then they ever would by using fear tactics. That is one of the mean ways that the government controls people to get them to go along with things you would normally say no to. You should never teach your kids to be less than so they can fit in. F*** fitting in. The people that stand out are the ones that don’t care about fitting in. Teach them to be a power to be reckoned with. MLK, Malcom X, Obama stand out. I am sure they had fears just like anyone else yet they didn’t let that stop them. Let what they have accomplished speak for not letting fear stop them be the thing that empowers your children. We all deserve that.

  15. Okay you have all spoken so eloquently, but those words mean nothing when you’re staring down the barrel of a gun, with some crazy white person wanting to kill you because we have a black president. I am a realist.

  16. I have to ask you have any of these things happened to you if so when. Most fears are irrational and never happen. When you are afraid something like that will happen to you, you are supposed to say I have no proof of that. Most of the things we fear will happen never come to pass and the things you fear most if you give to much thought you actually bring into being. Whatever you give the most energy whether it is positive or negative you make it happen. Trust in the lord. If they didn’t have people like Obama then we would still be getting beat and or shot just for being black. That is what was happening before the likes of MLK, Malcom X and those other brave souls that tried to make lives better for all no matter the color of their skin. Don’t take this the wrong way, but in slaves days people who feel like you feel now were always the ones going to massah and telling on the people who opposed mistreatment. Fear is your biggest enemy if you let it control life then you are giving the op posers just what they want. I refuse to be shoveled BS with no Vaseline. I knew it was a good chance something like this would happen. That was being real. Into every life a little rain must fall what matters most is how you weather the storm. I stay in Forsyth County in GA it has been one of the most raciest counties in the US yet I still come and go as a please. When people that try to intimate you see they are getting to you that gives them the sign that it is working and to keep up the good work. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us. You can chose to live your life in fear and running away from danger or you can go down fighting. I know which way I would chose. Hell if I am going to die anyone I will do my best to take the sucker with me.

  17. I mean if I am going to die anyway I will do my best to take the sucker with me.

  18. Potok, who is white, said he believes there is “a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them.”

HAHAHA THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BIGGEST JOKE, SHE MUST MEAN HER FOREFATHERS STOLE!!! WHITE PEOPLE AINT BUILD NOTHING, THEY STOLE EVERYTHING THEY GOT BACK THEN, AND RAPED EVERYTHING THEY GOT BACK THEN, I WONDER HOW MANY OF THEM KNOW , A BLACK SLAVE DESIGNED THE WHITE HOUSE, AND THE CAPITAL, THE BIKES THEY RIDE A BLACK MAN INVENTED, I CAN GO ON AND ON, TRAFFIC LIGHTS, BUT I WONT BECAUSE THEY ALREADY FEEL STUPID, AND THEY ARE TRULY LIARS!!!! THIEVES!!! RAPISTS!!! BLACK MEN BETTER LOOK AT OBAMA AND SEE WHAT THAT MAN GOT STANDING BESIDE HIM AND GO BACK HOME AND LIFT THAT BLACK WOMAN UP, AND MAKE IT WORK!! GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL, THE ONLY, AND THE FIRST, QUEENS, MY BROTHER, OBAMA VERY WISE MAN!! my brothers, that black woman can be your strength and your carrier, she is the strongest of all races of women, she can endure any weather, and she will have your back till death, if you have hers the same way and stop running when she has a mind of her own, and a strong opinion on what she believes, and stands up for herself and not let anyone run over her, to me that is strength and power!! do you think runnig to the otherside of that fence will make it easier, that black woman can be anything you want her to be if given that chance and trust me when i say, hellcats comes in all races, you may wanna be careful how fast you try to get away from the sister and you may just run head first into a hellcat of another race , and another race certainly dont mean you are with the better woman!!! because at the end of the day, when they get angry at you and you do something that pisses them off greatly, 911 is in your face slamming you down, all they have to say is one or two words, beat and rape me, and your gone!! and when times get tough, they are the first to kill themselves and their kids, black women endures all reigns of weather!!! STRENGTH, BEAUTY, POWER, GLOW!! there will never be another!

  19. AND WHITE PEOPLE!! FOR GOD SAKE, YOU MAY AS WELL GET USE TO THIS CHANGE, BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE WHERE THIS IS COMING FROM, god said ” before the end of time, the top will fall to the bottom and the bottom will RISE TO THE TOP!! a change was bound to come, and its here, and its going to be more changes, what you thought you would stay on top forever!! nope!!

  20. Why is it that a Black Man can create a tiny piece called a filament (electric light – Lewis Latimer) that allows people to see in the dark…But can’t be seen fit to lead a country to the true light?

Why is it that a Black Man can create an instrument (clock – Benjamin Banneker) that all people use to tell time…But people don’t think it is time for him to run a country?

Why is it that a Black Man can design a place for the high authorities to meet in and a place for the president to live in (The Capital and the White House designed by Phillip Reid (a slave ) and Pierre L’Enfant)…But not good enough to lead these meetings or live in it himself?

Why is it that a Black Man was brilliant enough to do the first open heart surgery (Dr. Daniel Hale Williams) and show the world how to get and preserve plasma (Dr. Charles Drew)…But not good enough to put a program in place where everyone can afford this surgery?
Why is it that a Black Man was creative enough to design an instrument (traffic light – Garrett Morgan) to bring multiple people (traffic) to a halt… But not seen creative enough to design a plan to bring all this unnecessary and worthless fighting between countries?

Why is it that a Black Man could create the soles (shoes – Jan Matzeliger) that people walk on every day…But not seen good enough to fill the shoes of a bad president?

Why is it that a Black Man was smart enough and brave enough to teach himself (Fredrick Douglas and Thomas Fuller – both slaves) and others how to read, write and/or calculate math….But not seen smart enough and bold enough to calculate a platform to be President to a country that sure needs another first by us?

My Brother and Sisters, let us not forget our past, which led us to our present and can definitely be the backbone to our future. We were good enough, smart enough, creative enough, and bold enough then, we are good enough, smart enough, creative, NOW!! my beautiful black strong, men!!! i love you and stand by your black women!!! and black women do the same!! if we stand together no other race in this world can hold a candle to our strength, talent and beauty!!!

  21. Although people must remember that it’s not all white people before we start making generalisations. let’s not get all, ‘we are the supreme race and ‘my president is black so there…’ ( i know of ppl whp’ve said that smh)
Forefathers… yeah i was SMH too, Potok and ‘his large white subset’ need to go back to school, cos i know the damn history and I’m not even American. You cnt change everyone’s attitudes which is sad but if there’s any discrimination going on… thats where you have to act. people shouldnt be suffering in silence. If there’s one thing black ppl know how to do, its to stand together when there’s injustice/discrimnation against our people.

    continue the good work BCK.

  22. no its not all white people at all, but bottom line, my people need to stand closer, stronger, together, in unity!!!!!! always

  23. Are you kiddding me ,his sucess is such a blessing to us all. Time or change all the way. Can u imagine compared to all of the obama supporters what an uproar there would have been if he did not win.All of the celebrities ,socialites ,politicians ,ect that annonced that they supported him.o.k LadyOne less people are pissed THIS WAY dont u think?I for one am more than rejoiced that are country can finally better itself and have a bright future.I am sure a lot more people are happy that he one to.but i also can see where your coming from but i dont think you should be fearful or that the fear is necessary.

  24. LadyOne,

Don’t live in fear, change is a hard thing for some people to swallow, but it is not like racism is new…it is just a little more blatant right now. I have just moved away from Georgia and was born and raised in Arkansas-the threat that someone might harm you or your children for being of color is always there, but you learn to keep your eyes and ears open to notice any insane happenings that may occur, that being said I am glad about President Obama being in the White House. Those people who choose to believe that the world only belongs to them will need to get a grip on reality at some point and realize that their narrow-minded thinking will only be their downfall in the end.

  25. And about the comment “the country their forefathers built” I found that funny as well, but that is what the schools history classes spout to your childen and mine as well as theirs. I heard of a story in Georgia where a black history teacher got in trouble for putting President Obama on her classroom wall- and she was teaching her students about current events (and if anyone on the forum knows more about this story, let me know because I want to know the outcome)! The truth here is the people who feel as if their whole world is now turned upside down should just suck it up and get on with trying to better their lives instead of focusing on hatred.
