MEL B:GIVING BACK MAKES ME A TOUGHER MOM

•December 18, 2008 • 3 Comments

melbheadshotSinger Mel B finds it “disgusting” when a celebrity doesn’t give back to charity. The Spice-girl says, “Do you know what? I think it’s disgusting when a celebrity isn’t doing something for charity. It feels so good and it’s so easy – when you’ve got the money and you’ve got the exposure – to give something back.”

The mom of two also finds that giving back helps her to be tougher on her daughters, Phoenix, nine, and 20-month-old Angel.

“If Phoenix starts crying because she wants something, I say, ‘What’s the matter? Are you hungry? In pain? No, well stop right now because there are a lot of children in the world a lot worse off than you. And the good thing is I can actually come out with the facts which I know now because I support a few charities like Oxfam.”

ATHLETICISM RUNS IN THE WASHINGTON FAMILY

•December 18, 2008 • 8 Comments

Denzel and sonActor Denzel Washington is the father of two daughters and two very athletic sons. Denzel’s oldest son, John David, is a running back on the practice squad of the St. Louis Rams; his youngest son Malcolm(pictured),17, has barely finished high school, but he already has sports columnists talking. As described by sports columnist Frank Burlison:

“Malcolm understands how a point guard is supposed to play, especially in terms of running the offense and taking care of the basketball. He’s not careless or too flashy, like a lot of guys at the position. He’s a sound defensive player with great fundamentals. They list him at 5’11, which is probably generous, and he rarely shoots, but he has all the intangibles you want from a point guard. He doesn’t over-handle the ball, and he really creates opportunities for the whole offense, not just for himself. From what I understand, he’s going to the University of Pennsylvania, and at an Ivy League school, he could play substantial minutes. He has physical limitations, being short and not especially fast, but he’s a coach’s player, the kind of kid every coach wants to have on his team.”

Denzel, who attends most of his sons games, must be a proud dad.

NEWS:AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER TWO-PARENT BLACK FAMILIES;A DECREASE FOR NON-HISPANIC WHITES?

•December 17, 2008 • 4 Comments

graphVia NyTimes
The number of black children being raised by two parents appears to be edging higher than at any time in a generation, at nearly 40 percent, according to newly released census data.

Demographers said such a trend might be partly attributable to the growing proportion of immigrants in the nation’s black population. It may have been driven, too, by the values of an emerging black middle class, a trend that could be jeopardized by the current economic meltdown.

The Census Bureau attributed an indeterminate amount of the increase to revised definitions adopted in 2007, which identify as parents any man and woman living together, whether or not they are married or the child’s biological parents.

According to the bureau’s estimates, the number of black children living with two parents was 59 percent in 1970, falling to 42 percent in 1980, 38 percent in 1990 and 35 percent in 2004. In 2007, the latest year for which data is available, it was 40 percent.

For non-Hispanic whites, the figure in 2007 was 77 percent, down from 90 percent in 1970.
While expressing skepticism about an increase so large in such a short time in the number of black children living with two parents, a number of experts said the shift was potentially significant.
