I want to teach [my kids] about all religions [and culture], and I’m trying to find a way to do that. And when it comes to the subject of adoption, like when my daughter, who’s African, wants her hair to look straight like mummy’s . . . and I look for a Barbie that’s African, and the African Barbie has straight hair! And you know, why has Disney never made a film with an African-American princess? ~Actress Angelina Jolie on not being able to find any African barbies for daughter Zahara (source)

BCK Says: Do you agree with Angelina? Do you find that there are no African curly-haired barbies out there?

DONOVAN MCNABB AND WIFE WELCOME A BOY…AND A GIRL!

•December 4, 2008 • 6 Comments

Eagles McNabb FootballDonovan McNabb is ecstatic about the birth of his twins. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and his wife Racquel a.k.a. Roxie welcomed a twin boy and girl early Tuesday morning.

“I was able to be there which is obviously a memorable thing. One that, I think as a father, you want to be a part of. Being a part of that and being able to see your kids being born is a wonderful feeling,” said McNabb.

The McNabb twins will join their sister, four-year-old daughter Alexis and their two bulldogs, Diamond and Duce.

“People talk about how family is the most important thing in your life and it is. No matter what happens out on the football field, you always know that you go home to the loving individuals who just truly love you for who you are, not what you do. It’s a difference when you talk about family love and love for what you do. When it comes to family, despite whatever you may do, decisions you make, the mistakes that you make, when you go home, I can always look into my daughter’s eyes and my daughter tells me she loves me, and that’s a different feeling,” said McNabb.

cat on a hot tin roof afterparty 070308“Just seeing the joy that your children have at being home for vacation. Remembering when I was a kid myself, and seeing the younger version of myself smile up at me, and knowing that I have the opportunity to make all of their wishes come true. My kids love music, so they want instruments, but mostly what they want is my time. This business can pull you away a lot, so they want me home.”~ Actor Terrence Howard on cherishing the holidays with his kids(Source)

A QUICK CHAT WITH PREGNANT ARTIST M.I.A

M.I.A., 31, whose real name is Mathangi Arulpragasam, had a quick chat with UsaToday recently. M.I.A reveals that she and her fiance Benjamin Brewer will choose a name for their unborn child after he or she is born. In addition, M.I.A reveals that pregnany has made her “less angry.’

Q: Have you picked out baby names?

Not really. I need to see the baby and see who it is, what kind of personality it’ll have. I need to give a name that is the character of the child. We’re quite relaxed about the whole thing.

Q: And naturally, the kid will be a musician, right?

I think my baby is going to start off making club music. That’s all I’ve been listening to. Of course, you never know. When you want someone to do something, it ends up doing the opposite. It might end up being an accountant. We actually don’t want our kid to do music, so we’re going to buy it loads of instruments … so that it will completely rebel and go the other way.

Q: How will motherhood change your music?

In one way I feel like you do feel more connected with the whole planet. You feel really across the board. When I sing, I have to be aware that someone can hear me inside. It’s really strange. I definitely feel less angry.

Q: Has the film bug hit you, now that Slumdog Millionaire is getting Oscar attention?

I’d love to make a movie. I told Danny (Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire’s director) that. I went to film school. I went to art school, but I studied film. That’s always been one of my things. Still … music is so much easier because it’s like an individual expression.

SAFE DRIVING WITH VANESSA WILLIAMS AND SON DEVIN

•December 3, 2008 • 17 Comments

Actress Vanessa Williams and son Devin Hervey,15, signed a contract yesterday which launches AllState’s national Home for the Holidays teen safe driving campaign. The campaign is an initiative which allows parents and their teens to have a conversation about safe driving. Vanessa Williams, who is a mother to three girls and a boy, says that she takes every opportunity to talk to her kids about safe driving:

“As a mother of two older daughters, I’ve given them the car keys and worried whether they would make it home safe. The fact is that our teens are more likely to die in a car crash than from anything else, so having the safe driving talk with your teen is just as important as talking about drugs and sex,” Williams said. “As the holidays arrive, parents and teens should use the Allstate Parent-Teen Driving Contract as way to begin a conversation that can be a gift of life.”

The interactive Allstate contract is available online at http://www.allstate.com/teen.

NIA LONG:THE RESPONSIBLE PARENT

•December 3, 2008 • 3 Comments

niamassaiBeing a mom to eight-year-old Massai Zhivago Dorsey II has taught actress Nia Long to have a sense a humor. Nia reveals, “I definitely have a great sense of humor and always try to find the funny in the craziness of life. But when you have children you have to have a sense of humor because nothing goes the way you plan. I consider myself spontaneous but I also have a responsible side that makes sure things are handled and business is taken care of.” When not acting, Nia tries to spend as much time with her son. She says, “I have become more selective about spending time away now. If it’s a project that requires me to be away, I really need to love it. It is so hard to be away from him and I try to avoid it. He is at an age where they are introducing reading, writing and arithmetic so right now I generally just don’t leave. Four days is probably the longest and while I’m away we talk on the phone a lot.”

As a responsible parent, Nia takes pride in teaching her son about the environment.

“He’s involved in a program at school called Roots and Shoots where they learn about keeping our world green with recycling and conservation. They have a school trip planned to the recycling center… school is very conscious of the environment.”

Nia Long also wants to be a positive role model to her son and her community as a whole.

“I don’t try to live my life to be recognized as a role model, but as a mom and as one of the premiere African-American women in Hollywood, it is important to set a positive example. if I can help the community or inspire another mom or actress, then I think that’s a great part of this whole opportunity.”
